I was inspired to share the poem 'When My Brother Fell' for National Coming Out Day 2008. It was done by Essex Hemphill, a black gay poet. Hemphill wrote this poem for Joseph Beam, a black gay rights activist who died of AIDS when in the process of writing an anthology known today as "brother to brother," which Hemphill completed and published. Both men were revolutionaries and fought for the visibility and rights of black LGBT people. This poem gives me strength and inspiration when I think about sharing my truth with others. When my brothers (those who came before me) fall, I must pick up their weapons and continue the fight they cannot. When My Brother Fell(For Joseph Beam)When my brother fellI picked up his weaponsand never once questionedwhether I could carrythe weight and grief, the responsibility he shouldered.I never questionedwhether I could aimor be as precise as he.I only knew he had fallen, and the passing ceremoniesmarking his deathdid not stop the war.Standing at the front linesflanked by able brotherswho miss his eloquent courage, his insistent voiceurging us to rebel, urging us to not fear embracingfor more than sex,for more than kissesand notches in our belts. Our loss is greaterthan all the spacewe fill with prayersand praise. He burned outhis pure life forceto bring us dignity,to bring us a chanceto love ourselveswith commitment. He knew the simplespilling of seedwould not be enoughto bind us.It is difficultto stop marching, Joseph, impossible to stop our assault. The tributes and testimoniesin your honorflare up like torches.Every nighta light blazes for youin one of our hearts. There was no one lonelierthan you, Joseph.Perhaps you wanted loveso desperately and pleadedwith God for the only mercythat could be spared.Perhaps God knewyou couldn't be givenmore than public lovein this lifetime. When I standon the front lines, nowcussing the lack of truth, the absence of willful changeand strategic coalitions,I realize sewing quiltswill not bring you backnor save us.It's too soonto make monumentsfor all we are losing, for the lack of truthas to why we are dying, who wants us dead, what purpose does it serve? When my brother fellI picked up his weapons.I didn't questionwhether I could aimor be as precise as he.A needle and threadwere not amonghis thingsI found.-Essex Hemphill(from "brother to brother: New Writings By Black Gay Men")
