"Pi: The life and death of a circle." The music is based on the transcendental and irrational pattern-- the intervals and rhythms-- inherent in the decimal expansion of the number Pi, which is 3.141592 . . .. The images express the thoughts and feelings of a particular sentient circle, whose name might be Theodophilus. According to one account, this circle has come down into our solar system, and to our planet from the Platonic realm of pure and perfect concepts. In the first section of the music, we hear the circle come into contact with our earthly realities, mostly those which include both the practical and the theoretical uses of the concept of the circle. He apprehends equations, circles, ellipses, and other geometric figures. He visits many time periods and places, and sees: wheels, shields, chariots, cups (used to poison philosophers), emblems of war, designs for weapons, missiles, flying machines, models of subatomic interaction; also he encounters various important philosophers and thinkers: Aristotle, Plato, Archimedes, Eratosthenes, davinci, Einstein, debroglie, Dirac, and Schroedinger. He also encounters the female form and comes to understand something of our fascination with the flesh and sensuality, as expressed in real life, and in paintings by Rubens, Picasso, Braque, Duchamp, Tanguy, and Renoir.
