Oliver Cromwell headed north out of Crewe up to Carlisle. She was meant to return with the train that evening however the diesels (37 706 and 47 760) took over the return train at Preston. Despite the excursion being named 'The Cumbrian Mountain Express' she left Crewe bearing the headboard 'The Roaring Monster'.
