I posted this for you Nate- this is a small part of the famous Chomsky hash debate (that you never even heard of). As the story goes, Foucault would only debate Chomsky if his grad student (shown in the debate seated next to Foucault) scored some hash from Chomsky. Chomsky had one of his grad students get it... Anyhoo- here is the edited version (i only had 10 minutes to start out with), in which i cut out bonehead Chomsky's rap- leaving you to read the subtitles (of Foucaults responses). Narritative knowledge (the classroom, not research science) does not question its own legitimation- transmitting it in cirriculum based scripts w/o recourse to argument or proof- see from ~ 1:15 to 2:03 ~ in this video the relationship to power/knowledge, and the distribution of INFORMATION (which is commodified = sold (Francois Lyotards the Postmodern Condition: A report on Knowledge). When Foucault talks about Disciplining Bodies, it should be obvious that six hours in a classroom, for twelve years, is a perfect way for subjugating the body into rationalizing, normalizing, standardizing, and modernizing students for commodification in an industrialized society (ie a replaceable cog), where people become a product of a system of discourses, and practices- which form part of the control of the (puesdo) individual (normalization- ieinternalized discourse/dialogue). An experimental attempt to integrate Lyotard's concept of the Matrix with Bataille's definition of the Sacred. To embody the sacred I chose footage that embodies the varying degrees of 'sacred': equal parts horror and delight, a perfect push and pull between repulsion and ardor. To reflect on the relationship of the Matrix I found a rhythm created by two watchers sharing the overlapping experience of watching such 'sacred' videos. I'm not sure, but it may be a total load of bull, but I enjoy it nonetheless. Made for Vis 183A at UCSD in Spring 2008.
