Theres also magnetics technology, and this, too, is closely related to daily life. By combining electronics and magnetics technologies, a new technology has been created, called spin electronics. Q.If you ask what sort of thing spin electronics is, well, if theres an electron, it has an electric charge. And when something with an electric charge rotates, a magnetic field is created nearby. We call such rotational motion spin, and it enables an electron to act like a magnet. The motion of electrons can be controlled through magnetic properties. Alternatively, the motion of electrons, in other words an electric current, can control magnetic properties. So theres a mutual relationship between magnetic properties and electric currents. And this mutual relationship can be used to make new types of electronics. This field is called spin electronics, or spintronics for short. In our research, were developing materials that are useful in spintronics. Professor Takanashi is a specialist in magnetic engineering. He was formerly a visiting fellow at Juelich Research Center, which is home to Peter Gruenberg, a Nobel laureate in physics.
