Max Rosenthal was born in Berlin and was forced to leave shortly after Krystalnacht. He and his family immigrated to the United States in 1939 and lived for many years in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. Once he finished school and ended a stint in the army, he studied pattern making and worked in the childrens wear business for his entire career.
