The spirit of a play is bothering me. This spirit has been sending me songs, scenes, and characters and I can hardly wait to see where it will take me. I THINK I LOVE YOU, An All Night Round Dance I'm asking you to contribute to the making of this story. Imagine a hotel room, your best friend at the pinnacle of her art career dies in a stupid double suicide with the love of her life. You and the rest of her close circle of friends from an Indian arts school have all come together for her memorial. You return to connect to what has been lost and undone. You stay up all night in a Santa Fe Hotel room, stories emerge that reveal the inter-connections and secrets held between everyone. Everyone will be changed by what is revealed by morning light. What give the play momentum is the chorus. The Chorus is made up of everyones ex-lovers and doubles as a funky tribal rock stomp dance band playing original music. Your contribution will help pay for the research, the writing of the script, the writing of 3 original songs, meetings with Shirley Fishman, and a reading of the first draft of the play at the Public Theater in New York City. The Elzay and Stambaugh Studio Theatre galleries at Ohio Northern University will host "First People, Last People," an exhibit of paintings by Jason Godeke, from Sept. 7--26. Godeke, an assistant professor of drawing and design at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, creates paintings that brilliantly balance fantastical subjects and classical style. Included in his visually realistic paintings are toy figurines taking part in imaginative, tension-filled scenes. "I have long been intrigued by toy figures, which lie somewhere between person and thing," Godeke said. "A plastic figure wears its stereotype on its sleeve; there is no pretense of it having the particularity of a real person. A figurine is a myth or an archetype. At its best, a toy figure allows us to project our own psyche onto its blank expression. It's also mass-produced and impersonal. In making a painting of a plastic statuette, I aim to give that machine-made copy a handmade uniqueness." A native of Northern California, Godeke spent his junior year of high school in The Netherlands, where his interest in drawing and painting first took shape. He wrote, "In my paintings, I explore theatrical narratives. I find themes in personal experience (eg family life, my work as an emergency medical technician), myths, and historical events. I am interested in creating a tension between a traditional, attractive form and specific, sometimes disturbing subject matter. The challenge for me is to bring contemporary ...
