So much pomp and ceremony! I wonder, did Peter wear a pallium? I don't think he did. I don't think he had a great big palace at the Vatican. I don't think he was adorned with jewels and costly vestments. I don't think he had a papal flag or a ring of Saint Peter. Peter said at the gate, "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk." Acts 3:6 Peter was just one of many poor disciples of Christ Jesus, and what he had, he gave to the poor. Can we say the same about the man that supposedly occupies the chair of Saint Peter? The bride's notable words about the city of Rome. They take the form of an inquiry, pointing to the Romans' earlier consolation, devotion, and good order, among both clerics and lay people, and asking why all this has now sadly been turned into desolation and disorder and abomination, as is clear from all the aforesaid, and about how unhappy Rome is both materially and spiritually. Book 4 - Chapter 33 SAINT BRIDGET PATRON SAINT OF EUROPE PART III There have been saints who gave up great wealth and started monastic orders based on poverty, who practiced contempt toward any kind of cupidity and, consequently, did not wish to have anything of their own. They abhorred all kinds of conceit and worldly pomp. They dressed in the poorest of clothes, utterly detesting the concupiscence of the flesh, and thus maintaining their purity of life. They and their followers are called mendicant friars, and the Roman pontiffs confirmed their rules with joy, seeing that they wanted to follow such a way of life for the glory of God and the benefit of souls. Yet it is a sorrow to behold even their rules now converted into detestable occasions of abuse and scarcely observed in the way that Augustine, Dominic, and Francis prescribed under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, rules faithfully observed by many a wealthy nobleman for such a long time! To be sure, as rumor now has it, there are many men called wealthy who, as far as valuables and money are concerned, are poorer than those who have ...

A woman jumped the barriers in St Peter's Basilica in Rome last night and knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he walked down the main aisle to begin Christmas Eve Mass. Footage aired on Italy's RAI state TV showed a woman dressed in a red hooded jumper vaulting the wooden barriers and rushing towards the Pope before being swamped by bodyguards. The 82-year-old pontiff quickly got up and was unhurt, said a Vatican spokesman, the Reverend Ciro Benedettini. The woman grabbed the pontiff's gold and white vestments as she was tackled by a security guard and both she and the pope then fell to the marble floor. The commotion occurred as the Pope's procession was making its way toward the main altar and gasps rang out through the faithful in the basilica. Confusion reigned as security guards rushed down the aisle to assist the Pope. After the incident, Pope Benedict, flanked by tense bodyguards, resumed his walk to the basilica's main altar to start the Mass. He did appear somewhat shaken and leaned heavily on aides and an armrest as he sat down in his chair. Pope Benedict made no reference to the incident as the service started. As a choir sang, he sprinkled incense on the altar before opening the Mass with the traditional wish for peace in Latin. It was the second year in a row there was a security breach at the service. At the end of last year's Mass a woman - also wearing a red hooded top - who had jumped the barriers got close to the pope but was quickly blocked on the ground ...
