I have had a problem with these very small spiral snails for the last 8 years.I collected about 15 from a lake in the center of the Arava desert along with some Tiger Tilapia fry. The lake was filled from a bore hole.The water was heavily mineralised totally unsuitable for drinking but good for a number of crops.The fish and snails were "weened" onto/into ordinairy [as ordinairy as it gets in Eilat!] tap water over 2 days.The fish thrived and alas the snails reproduced in the undergravel filter.About 3 years later early morning or just before sunset, the glass would be totally covered with these snails.I kept removing them and they came back in greater numbers!Finally, I broke down the undergravel filter and set up an external one.I used a very small portion of the gravel to start the new filter.Some few years later, I have another small collection of these snails.Resilient is not the word. Anyway, as it is now straightforward to break down the bio filter I thought I would try some new media.Not Windows or Realplayer but BB,Q, charcoal thoroughly rinsed together with ceramic tile polishing scotch.Some medium gravel no apparent snails contained but there probably are eggs present.
